Mary Quant

Born in London in 1934 Quant studied illustration before working as an apprentice milliner and then switching to fashion design. She opened her first boutique, Bazaar, on King's Road in 1955. It was co-founded with her future husband, Alexander Plunket Greene. With its low prices and vibrant, modern designs, the shop signalled a new era in accessible fashion. Famed for popularising, if not inventing, the mini skirt, her designs were made up of simple shapes and strong colours
