Suffragettes

The year 1918 was a turning point in the fight for women to have the right to vote in the UK. February 2018 will mark one hundred years since the Representation of the People Act was passed which gave some women over 30 the right to vote. The photographs below represent some significant figures in this fight - with a mixture of famous faces (Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurt) and some who are lesser-known. Featuring images by significant women photographers such as Lena Connell, Alice Barker, the sisters Rita Martin and Lallie Charles, Christina Broom and May Hammond.
