Tilly Losch

The Austrian-born ballerina and actress Tilly (Ottilie) Losch (1903-75) danced with the Vienna State Opera Ballet from 1921 until 1928, including in Max Reinhardt's 1927 Salzburg Festival production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. In 1933 she founded her own company, 'Les Ballets'. Losch's later career concentrated on film, and she appeared in 'Limelight' (1936), 'The Garden of Allah' (1936), 'The Good Earth' (1937) and 'Duel in the Sun' (1946).

In 1930 Losch married Edward James, a poet, writer, philanthropist, and patron of the Surrealists; they divorced in in 1934. Five years later Losch married Henry Herbert, 6th Earl of Carnarvon. From the 1940s onwards she devoted much of her time to painting and had several exhibitions in New York.
